Salers Show & Sale Report Spring 2016:

The Salers Cattle Society held their Spring show and sale in Tullamore on Saturday 9th April. This sale was different to the usual Show & Sale as it had some unhaltered animals as well as haltered.

The numbers at the sale were down this year due to breeders selling most of their cattle at home with such demand for high index heifers and bulls this year. It was obvious that farmers are paying more for high replacement index animals.

A good demand for Salers with a sale clearance of 75% sold.  The overall top price of €3,900. went to the Champion Female “Knottown Olwyn 2”,  exhibited by Joe and Richard  Fortune, Knottown, Wexford, a 17 month old maiden heifer, with the overall highest replacement index value of €210. and 5 stars within the breed. She was sired by their own stock bull, “Charlemagn” which was imported from France in 2007, and the Dam is “Knottown Joyce”.

Reserve Female Champion went to a 13 month old heifer “Sligo Prada” exhibited by Bernard hunt, Gurteen, Co. Sligo. Sired by “Bronson” (S1209) and the Dam is “Sligo Molly”. She was sold for €1,700.

The Champion Male of the show was “Powerstown Oscar” a 2 year old son of “Bronson” (S1209) exhibited by Patrick and Michael Cronin, Powerstown House, Mallow, Co. Cork, and out of the Dam “Sligo Kade”. He was unsold.

Reserve Male Champion was “Brownhall Pauric”, sired by AI Bull “Bronson” (S1209) and the Dam is “Brownhall Grace”. Exhibited by Jimmy McGroarty, Ballintra, Co. Donegal. He was sold for €2,000.

Top priced Bull “Ballyrea Pat”, was a 5 star bull within the breed, with the highest replacement index value in the male section of €181. He sold for €2,225. A “Jovial” son bred by Michael Cahill, Ballyara, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo and out of the Dam “Ballyrea Lucy”.

The average price for Bulls was €2,025.

The in-calf heifer which sold for €2,000. was  ”Castlebar Olivia” a 26 month old heifer sired by “Bonaparte” (PZB), and the Dam is “Castlebar Kaoife”, she was exhibited by Padraic Lavelle, Knocknaskibbole, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.

In the unhaltered maiden heifer section, top price of €2,100.00 went to “Brownhall Paula”, a March 2015 heifer who was 2nd in her class, she had 5 stars within the breed and a replacement index value of €174.. Owned by Jimmy McGroarty, Ballintra, Co. Donegal, sired by his stock Bull “Ibis” imported from France in 2013, and the Dam is “Brownhall Jasimen”

Jimmy McGroarty who also owned the youngest heifer born on 28th March 2015 was sold for €1,700.00 “Brownhall Peach”, she was 1st in her class. Sired by stock Bull “Ibis”, and her Dam is Touraine. Heifers average price €1,711.

SHOW & SALE REPORT 14th November 2015.

Saturday 14th November witnessed exceptional demand for pedigree Salers cattle at the Salers Cattle Society of Ireland Show & Sale in Tullamore Mart, Co. Offaly.  A Sale clearance rate of 80% reflected the demand for quality Salers genetics and high replacement index cattle. The  Average price for bulls was €3,000 up €1,000 on the Societies spring sale, all but 2 bulls were sold. Strong bidding from Irish breeders saw bidders from the U.K. go home empty handed.

Topping this sale at €3,500 was the out-standing Champion Male, a “RIO” son, “Manusmore Obama”, from the herd of John Burke, Clarecastle, Co. Clare. Born in November’14, he is out of the home-bred dam – Manusmore Harmony. A 5 star bull with an impressive replacement index of €207. This bull was no stranger on this years show circuit picking up many first prizes. “RIO” is one of the highest index bulls in Irish A.I..
 
Reserve Male Champion was Ashbury Nadal from the herd of Alfred Melvin, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin. A 4 star bull with a Replacement index of  €154 this son of stock bull “Volcan” was unsold on the day.
 
The champion female went to “Manusmore Olay” a 12 month old maiden heifer exhibited by John Burke, Clarecastle, Co. Clare. She was sired by his stock bull “Manusmore Modesty” she did not meet her reserve and was unsold.

Reserve Female Champion went to “Connemara Patricia” an 8 month old heifer exhibited by John O’Malley, Recess, Co.Galway. Sired by stock bull “ Knockavilra Nigal” she was sold for €1,600.
 
In the Incalf heifer section “Glenmore Naoise” exhibited by Thomas Mulcahy, Strand, Co. Limerick. Sired by French A.I. Bull “Ublo” and in-calf to A.I. bull “Vaillant” sold for €2450

Top price in the maiden heifer section went to “Sligo Omarie 2” exhibited by Bernard Hunt, Gurteen, Co.Sligo. Sired by A.I. Bull “Garou” she sold for €2,550

Also in the Maiden heifer section “Sligo Omisty” exhibited by Bernard Hunt, Gurteen, Co.Sligo. Sired by stock bull “Democrate” she sold for €2,400

In a strong Weanling heifer section there was a big demand for young Salers stock, Top price in this section went to “Ashbury OMG” from the herd of Alfred Melvin, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin this 12mth old heifer, Sired by stock bull “Gavroche” sold for €1,750.

Next highest price in this section went to “Sligo Ophelia” this 12mth heifer exhibited by Bernard Hunt, Gurteen, Co.Sligo. Sired by A.I. Bull “Vanlooy” she sold for €1,600.

Salers Society Spring Sale April 2015

The Salers Cattle Society held their Spring Show and Sale last Saturday in Tullamore Mart.

Congratulations to the Champion winners,  Alfred Melvin, Ashbury Salers, Mulhuddart, Dublin on winning Salers Champion Bull with "Ashbury Nugget" sired by stock bull, Emerald Avatar (UK 11) and Dam Urfa (FR 05). This Champion Bull born in March 2013 was sold for €2,400.   John O'Malley, Bohesial, Recess, Co. Galway won Salers Champion Female with “Connemara Noreen”, sired by Bronson S1209 and Dam Connemara Kathy, born in February 2013 she was sold for €2,800.

Reserve Champion Bull was “Lisnalee Noel" sired by Corlurgan Ourson (FR 02) OUR, Dam Lisnalee Julie owned by Patrick McIntyre, Lisnalee, Bailieboro, Co. Cavan which was sold for €2,000.

Reserve Champion Female was “Ashbury Noodle”, sired by Emerald Avatar (UK 11) Dam Ashbury June owned by Alfred Melvin, Ashbury Salers, Mulhuddart, Dublin which was unsold.

Congratulations to the Champion winners, David Kirrane, Carrentubber Salers, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo on winning Salers Champion Bull with “Carrentubber Norway”, sired by Bronson (S1209), and Dam Carrentubber Jodie. This Champion Bull born in March 2013 was sold for €2,300.   Alfred Melvin, Ashbury Salers, Mulhuddart, Dublin won Salers Champion Female with “Ashbury Lollipop”, sired by Volcan(FR 05) and Dam Silverfield Gail, an in-calf heifer which was un-sold at €2,600.

Reserve Champion Bull was “Ashbury Mason”, sired by Volcan (FR 05), Dam Ume (FR 05) owned by Alfred Melvin, Ashbury Salers, Mulhuddart, Dublin which sold for €2,200.

Congratulations to both Male and Female Champion winners. Seamus Nagle, Doolin, Co. Clare on winning the Salers Champion Bull with Doonagore Major, sired by Jovial (JVL). The Salers Female Champion was won by Thomas McGreal, Westport, Co. Mayo with Clew Bay May sired by Ballymackeogh Hugh (BHU).

Top price in the sale was the Champion Bull which sold for €5,000 and the champion female was unsold at €4,200. A 100% clearance for the maiden heifers with the average price €2,600.00 with the top price €4,000.

Eight bulls sold out of thirteen entries and 90% of the weanling heifers sold.

Salers Calf Championships 2013:

The Final of the Salers Calf Championships was held at the Salers Annual Show and Sale last Saturday in Roscrea with a very large attendance.

Bull Calf Champion was Sligo Muirse sired by Democrate, Dam, Sligo Hearty, owned by Bernard Hunt, Sligo Salers, Gurteen, Co. Sligo.

Heifer Calf Champion was Clew Bay May, sired by Ballymackeogh (BHU), Dam Manusmore Helga, owned by Thomas McGreal, Clew Bay Salers, Prospect, Westport, Co. Mayo.

24mth old heifer takes €4000 at Salers Annual show and sale.

The 8th annual show and sale of Pedigree Salers cattle took place in Roscrea Mart Co. Tipperary on Saturday 27th of October. Buyers from both North and South of the border turned up to buy all but four of the cattle on offer on the day. Judge for the day was Mr. Padraig Gallagher, Co. Sligo.

Top price of the day went to “Fane Kestrel” exhibited by Fergal Woods Blackstaff,Carrickmacross,Co. Monaghan she sold for €4000 she was by French sire “Variegeois” .

In the Bull section champion went to “Glenmore Leonidas” exhibited by Thomas Mulcahy Glenmore, Strand, Co. Limerick this 19 month old bull sold for €3000, he was sired by “Lataster Eric”.

Jimmy McGroarty Ballintra Co. Donegal also took home €3000 for his bull “Brownhall Laurence” .This bull Sired by his stock bull “Colonel” was exported to Northern Ireland Breeder Geoff Wilson, Co. Down.

Only two bulls were unsold in this section with one bull exported to Northern Ireland. The average for the bull section was €2500.

The champion female went to “Ashbury Lala” a 21 month old maiden heifer exhibited by Alfred Melvin, Ashbury house, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin. She was sired by his stock bull “Volcan” and was sold for €3450.

There was a total clearance in the maiden heifer section with an average of €2500.

There was also a total clearance in the weanling heifer section with top price of €2820 going to “Aughalion lucy” exhibited by Paddy Clerkin, Aughlion, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan. For his 11 month old heifer sired by “Valliant”.

Next highest price in this section went to “Clew Bay lucky Lucy” exhibited by Thomas McGreal, Prospect, Westport, Co. Mayo. This 10mth old heifer sired by “Ballymackeogh Hugh” sold for €1950.

The average for the weanling heifer section was €1800.

 

7th Saler Society Show & Sale – Roscrea Mart October 29th 2011

The 7th annual show and sale of Pedigree Salers cattle took place in Roscrea Mart Co. Tipperary on Saturday 29th of October. With buyers comming form the UK and all over Ireland demand was great for the high quality cattle on show at the sale.A packed ringside seen Top price of the day going to James McGroarty, Ballintra, Co. Donegal for his Incalf Heifer “Brownhall Jordan” she was sold for €3750 to Welsh breeder Alan Jones.”Brownhall Jordan” Is by “Rio” and by an imported cow “Uranie”.

In the large bull section Top price of €3550 went to Fernand Crowe, Carrickbawn, Ballinagh,Co.Cavan for his bull “Corlurgan Kayne”a 19mth old bull, he is by “Scorpion” and from an imported dam by “Muguet”.

Augustine Crowe, Drumlion, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan took home the next highest price of €3300 for his bull Drumlion Keith a 19mth old bull, He is by “Odon” he also received €2900 for another “Odon” bull 18mth old Drumlion Karl the champion male of the show.

Only 2 bulls were unsold in this section with one bull going North. The average for the bull section was €2700 up €1000 on last year’s sale.

There was a total clearance in the Female section. Top price in the Incalf section of €3750 was received by James McGroarty, Ballintra, Co. Donegal for his heifer “Brownhall Jordan” .Bernard Hunt, Gurteen, Co.Sligo took home €3450 for the champion heifer of the show “Sligo Islette” an Incalf heifer by “Voltaire”. Paula McKeon. Gurteen, Co. Sligo received €3150 for her Incalf Heifer “Redhill Jennifer” by “Ringo” she was sold to Scottish breeder Neil Barclay. The average for Incalf heifers was €3500 up €1200 on last year’s sale with one heifer going to Wales and one going to Scotland.

Top Price in the Maiden Heifer section of €2350 went to Alfred Melvin, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin for “Ashbury Jemina” she was by his stock bull “Volcan”.

There was a lively trade In the 12mths to 9mths female section of the sale Top price in this section of €3050 went to John Keating, Kilnaboy, Ennis,Co. Clare for his 11mth old heifer “Ballymackeogh Kelly” she was by “Ballymackeogh Hugh”. John Keating Also received €2300 for another 11mth old heifer “Ballymackeogh Kym” she was by stock bull “Trafalgar”. John Burke, Clarecastle Co. Clare took home €2300 for his 10mth old heifer “Manusmore Kala” She was by “Seducteur” and was sold to Northern Ireland Breeder Geoff Wilson, Co. Down. John Burke Also received €1750 for a 9mth old heifer “Manusmore Lulu” by stockbull “Baltazar”.Padraic McConn, Ballygar, Co. Galway received €1900 for a 12mth old heifer “Ballygar Kim” by a stockbull “Moygara Invincible”. Michael Mckeon Gurteen, Co. Sligo received €1700 for a 11mth old heifer “Moygara Kathryn” and was sold to Northern Ireland Breeder Geoff Wilson, Co. Down.

Average price in this section was €2300 up €700 on last year’s sale with 2 heifers going North.

11 month old Salers Heifer Ashbury Just Perfect tops €3,600

A large crowd packed Mountrath mart for the 6th Salers cattle show and sale. Quality cattle were in huge demand as buyers from both North and South purchased cattle at the sale. After what has been a challenging year for farmers it was clear to see that the demand for Salers cattle is growing each year as the breed is making a huge impact on the Irish suckler herd.

The Champion female “Ashbury Just Perfect” an 11 month old heifer was sold for €3,600; she was bred by Alfred Melvin Ashbury house, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin. She was sired by “Volcan” sire of many sale and show champions and by an imported cow by “Scorpion” a bull whose progeny also has a great track record in the sale and show ring.

There was an 80% clearance of heifers with 8 to 11 month old heifers averaging €1,600 and Incalf heifers averaging €2,300.

First Prize winners in the incalf heifer section was “Moygara Hucklebuck” owned byPaula Mckeon Mullaghroe, Gurteen, Co. Sligo.

First prize winner in the senior heifer section was “Clew Bay Julia” bred by Thomas Mc Greal. Prospect, Westport, Co. Mayo.

First Prize in the Junior Heifer section was “Ashbury Just Perfect” bred by Alfred Melvin Ashbury house, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin.

There was also a brisk trade in a small bull that section featured a number of prize winning bulls from this year’s show circuit.

The Champion bull “Ballymackeogh Ivory” owned by Eddie Brennan Coon east, Coon, Co. Kilkenny was unsold on the day.

Top price in the male section went to “Ashbury Incredible” bred by Alfred Melvin Ashbury house, Mulhuddart. Co. Dublin. He was also sired by his stock bull “Volcan” and out of a home bred cow.

A new Society Sale record was set at €5,800 for “Brownhall Impressive” a 20mth old Salers heifer she was owned by Mr. James McGroarty, Brownhall,Ballintra, Co. Donegal.She was sired by his own stock bull “Sully” and out of a dam by “Marengo”.

The Female champion was “Corlurgan Holly” owned by Brian Halton, Corlurgan, Bailieboro, Co. Cavan.She was sired by “Scorpion” and out of a dam by “Ourson” she sold for €2,400.

Salers Female Champion, Ashbury Hermione, at the Show and Sale on Saturday in Mountrath, with breeder Alfie Melvin and family.

A great crowd seen an excellent trade for quality cattle. With a entry of  51 cattle there was a total clearance and the top price of €2,450 was received by Cavan Breeder Brian Halton for an incalf heifer at the Salers Society Show and Sale on the 1st of November at Mountrath Mart.Dublin Breeder Mr. Alfred Melvin took the top prize in both the Male and Female section.

CHAMPION MALE was “Ashbury Galileo” He was bred by Mr. Alfred Melvin, Ashbury House, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin. He was by “Volcan” and out of a dam by “Raceur”,and sold for €1,800.

THE RESERVE CHAMPION MALE was “Ballymackeogh Gonzo”  Bred by John Keating Ballymackeogh Lodge, Kilnaboy, Ennis Co. Clare. He was by “Roman” and out of a dam by “Labeau” .He sold for the top price in the male section at €1,950.

The Female Champion went to “Ashbury Hermione” .She was bred by Mr. Alfred Melvin, Ashbury House, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin.She was by “Volcan” And out of a dam by “Poete”. She sold for €2,300.

The Reserve Female Champion went to “Ashbury Harriet”. She was bred by Mr. Alfred Melvin, Ashbury House, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin.She was by “Volcan” And out of a dam by “Lioran”. She sold for €1,600.

The Reserve Male Champion went to “Sheelin Ginger” He was bred by Mr. Seamus Gaffney, Gallonbawn, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan. He was by “Ocaire” and out of a dam by “Marquis”. He was sold for €2,200.

There was a 75% clearance with an average price of €1,850 for bulls on the day.

The Female Champoin went to “Sheelin Highlight” .She was bred by Mr. Seamus Gaffney, Gallonbawn, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan. She was by “Ourson” And out of a dam by “Marquis”. She sold for the top price in the Female section at €2,300.

A good attendance and a very lively trade resulted in a top price of €3,750 for an in calf heifer at the Salers Society show and sale in Mountrath mart on Saturday the 15th of September.

THE CHAMPION FEMALE was “Killasser Gerty” bred by John Maloney, Killasser, Swinford

Co. Mayo. She is by “RIO” out of a dam by “Killasser Nation”. She was unsold.

RESERVE FEMALE CHAMPION  was “Corlurgan Farha” bred by Brian Halton, Corlurgan, Bailieboro, Co. Cavan. She is by “Ourson” out of a dam by “Fuji Yama”

1st Pedigree Society Sale Mountrath Mart September 2006

A slow trade for bulls and a flying trade for Heifers was the result of the Salers Societys first ever sale in Mountrath Mart.

Champion Male "Corlurgan Festus" Jan '05 bull which was unsold is owned by Brian Halton of Bailieboro, Co. Cavan.

Top Price in the bull section was received by Michael & Daniel McKeon of Gurteen Co. Sligo for their Jan.'05 born bull "Moygara Falstaff". Placed 3rd in his class he was unsold but in a deal concluded later in the evening he was purchased as a future stock bull for €3000. by a Cavan breeder.

Champion Female and secured top price of the day and was "Dunlo Eva" Feb '04 born, in-calf Heifer owned by Michael & Kathleen Ward of Ballinasloe and sold to Joe Fortune of Wexford for €4,000.

LATASTER ERIC, bred by Brendan and Pauline Clarke, Virginia, Co. Cavan, made the overall top price at the Tully Test Station Sale, Saturday March 4th, sold for €6,800

Lataster Eric was All Ireland Salers Calf Champion 2005, the final, which took place at the National Ploughing Championships.

He has a final weight gain at the end of the test 822 kilo, averaeg daily gain 1.73 kilo, average feed per day 9.4 kilo.

He was purchased by a consortium of 3 French breeders.
